Yet another project......
I had an idea at Pennsic......a way to dress up camp and show where we are from......
A friend of mine taught a silk banner painting class and has offered her help designing banners for friends. I've already asked her for help if we decide to go ahead with this and she's happy to assist.
My thought was to make a series of heraldic banners, where the first part near the standard is the populace badge for a specific Kingdom and the rest of the banner would be our arms and motto. There would be one for every Kingdom we infest...er inhabit......
I was thinking 4 ft for the banners.
Like the idea? Hate it?

Ellesbeth,
We talked about this at Pennsic.
I think this is a cool idea.
First of all, it's pretty. Makes us look pretty, and shows us off a little bit more.
In honesty, you'll probably get a bit of 'screw the known world, we don't need to show them we're awesome or look pretty!' from some people. But i think it will get some support too - as long as you're not expecting many to actually *do* the banners. They're more willing to get behind it if they can agree and then see the final product (my observation).
When you mentioned this to me, I immediately pictured this would be really cool to incorporate into our sheet wall. rather than having the short poles that the sheets are tied onto, we can use really large poles, like the 10 or 12 foot one the Confed banner was on by Black and Allie's yurt, and have the banners flying from that and the sheets of the sheet-wall tied on below it.
I had been thinking it would be cool to have the poles with banners inserted into a tube so they could be removed and walked up to the field without messing up the sheet-wall. however, lol, that would make them prime targets for theft from VD or whomever we pick on. lol. so I'd nix that idea.
I think this is really cool though.
Can we get a cost estimate for each banner? The more info we can get on this before presenting to the house the better, of course.
definitely like it though.

Here's my quick sketch of what i had in my mind when we talked about this at war (explained in previous post).

*sheetwall pictures and banner pictures just to help illustrate - and cause i was bored. is this too fancied up for confed?

Love it...
Sophie,
I love the overall idea.......I love your design, it looks fab! I'll do a cost breakdown, everything is readily available from Dharma trading and beyond that we need to build a frame to stretch the silk on.
We now need a list of what Kingdoms we're in.......
Yes I know some folks attitudes........they'll get over it! It would look spiff and I for one am proud to serve my Kingdom and the SCA as a whole, because without the SCA where would we get to play our game of mercs?
It speaks to our longevity and the contrubutions of our members over the years to the various Kingdoms and the SCA.

Wow!
That'd look AWESOME!
alright... y'all can shoot me now, but what will the gate look like then? We'd have to have a spiff one to match that wall...

Sheetwall
lol - yeah, the gate is a whole other story....
before pennsic, jeff, my dad and i talked a lot about gate possibilities (since angus killed last years and then in taking the PoH we didn't have a gate). we had a couple of ideas, but then dad amazingly found that erection in his storage garage so we went with that for cheap and easy.
there's some random info for you.
anyway, yeah, gate is sepearate.
i like the idea of the penants. i'm still looking to buy a bolt of fabric from JoMar (Ellesbeth, Lenora and I also chatted briefly about that at war). I'm planning on pre-cutting and hemming it so a piece can be given to everyone in the household who wants to paint something on them (which is probably like 5 people, lol) but then all the fabrics will match and the sheets will be the same size (spiffy as our camp looked, our sheetwall was sad!).
blue seems to be the most obvious choice for our sheetwall and that's what it has been in the past. however, blue isnt' really the easiest color to paint pictures and such on. so that lead me to think of doing white sheetwalls with a wide blue border around them? or just make blue ones and whoever wants to paint something on white can and it can be put on top of the white? i dunno, just thinkin....

Re: Yet another project......
Thing about blue sheetwalls is they don't show the dirt anywhere near as much as white ones do.
And they don't look quite so much like sheets
of course you're right, Sophie, it's hard to see things that are painted on blue, so a white background works well...
Seems like an awful lot of work to do borders etc.
Don't have a suggestion per se. Maybe having a wall of sheets that match in blue, and if people want a white (or other color) background, they can paint the design on something else and then attach it to the base sheet? Like, if the base sheets are blue duck or the like, then people could use anything, broad cloth, muslin, etc., but with the heavy base, the sheet would stand up to wind and rain...
dunno, I'm rambling

Re: Yet another project......
nope, makes sense.
i like blue sheets for the same reason, and if they want to put it on white, i can always be applied onto the blue sheet for continuity. thus creating a border (hm... lol...)
